I also think that ME:A learned from it's predecessors failures in a couple of other noteworthy ways. (Some people might prefer a higher pressure story, but I think that's a separate question) Considering how many games really seem to struggle at this, it seems significant to me to praise this aspect. Nobody's got that much to spare (nor did they bring that much to start it seems), and there's no "selling guns to the people defending against the zombie apocalypse" style pressure.

It also makes sense that you're marking resource deposits, that you have to spend your own cash and research to upgrade your weapons. In the tutorial segment, your father actually calls you out if you failed to explore thoroughly because you were rushing to find him. Every little bit helps, and that's kinda your job in the first place. It makes sense that you're exploring every nook and cranny and doing odd jobs. That narrative framework provides a truly excellent and versatile hook from which to hang the various elements of gameplay. Sure the Kett or out there, generally making themselves annoying, but there's no sense of immediate threat nothing indicates they're going to try and wipe you out soon, they're just making life harder still. There's no single imminent threat, except the seemingly inevitable running out of resources and failure of the colony project. In ME:A, the central driving tension is basically that your colonies have arrived under very harsh circumstances and are surviving on a shoestring. disconnect made all the more so by the general effectiveness of the writing in that game.Ĭontrast ME:A. However, if you do so, you'll miss out on an important weapon upgrade hidden down a side passage that there's no narrative reason for you to explore at all. You can hear them fighting and dying over the radio link, so the story is pushing you to rush rush rush. I particularly remember a mission where you're rushing to find and rescue a downed Turian ship. ME3 is one of the worst offenders there, and many people have made the jokes about "The Reapers are coming! Better help this guy unlock his email account." It goes beyond quests structure though. A lot of RPGs run into the problem of combining narrative urgency with a exploration-based gameplay and a strong mechanical incentive to slow down and explore. ME:A does perhaps the best job I've seen in a narrative driven RPG at making the story and motivation fit the gameplay.

Let me start with what I was most impressed by. At it's core, I think ME:A had some remarkably good structural insights, let down by lackluster execution throughout. It's probably my least favorite Mass Effect game, but that's actually hard to say because of the degree to which the first 3 blend together into a trilogy in retrospect (but more on that later). I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it either.
